This is really more of a groups question than a gmail question, but I think
I can help you.

The group won't let you unassociate, cause it has to have at least one
owner, and I suspect your personal account is listed as the sole owner.
The trick is to create that new gmail account, subscribe it to the group,
then from the personal account's login, promote the new account to owner
status, so the personal account can be unsubbed.
