Hi,

I decided to make completely new repositories, dropping the old history.
It would make the local git repositories larger without having a real value.
Also, I can use the opportunity to kick out some legacy stuff.
I hardly had to move to earlier versions of the code, and in the very few
cases I could do this manually.

But I plan to write a bit more informative log-messages from now on ;)

hooray for git.

i was going to suggest to use https://github.com/gmerlin as a project
namespace, but just noticed that this seems to be taken already.
for multi-repository projects (like gmerlin), i would generally suggest
to host them in a project-specific (as opposed to "personal") namespace:
it's much easier to find your way around...
but of course, gmerlin is all yours, so do as you please :-)

the other suggestion i was going to make is, that i could offer to
migrate the SVN history to git (just as I did with the CVS->SVN migration).
of course, most of the commit messages for the gmerlin repository are
pretty generic (of the 1137 commits in the 'gavl' repository, 532 have a
commit message "* Update" without further information), so I don't know
who valuable such a conversion actually is.
otoh, gmerlin will have it's 20th birthday next year: i think it would
be a shame to lose all that history.
(and for finding the origin of regressions, bugs and fixes, a full
history makes wonders)

no thanks, i'm not going to volunteer here... :-P
