This means that GTK has to convert between 24 bpp and 16 bpp buffers, which is CPU intensive. The FB GUI should be faster but it's also not not optimal when bitmaps are involved (which are stored as 24bpp buffers) - not the case for the frog movie but at least a memory issue for the Elvis movie. MAybe it's possible to have native (16 bit) buffers in GTK..
