I think that libavformat on Feisty Fawn has been mis-packaged. The package specifies libs in its pkg-config file that aren't required when you install the package. Thus, when you compile gnash with ffmpeg on Feisty, you run into missing libs at link time.
Since Feisty has been replaced by Gutsy for long term support, everybody running Feisty should be upgrading to Gutsy. Thus, I see no reason to delay 0.8.3 while I add dependencies for system libraries.
