I think the important thing to realise is that we're all here to ensure freedom. The way I saw it, the esteemed John Gilmore started this thread hoping to extend the SWF / AS format to include free codecs. Some suggestions were made; Benjamin (Otte) wrote in to voice his opinion that the best way to bring online video sites to be compatible with "freedom" would be to not extend the SWF specs, which are proprietary in nature, but to promote the <video> tag instead.
