But the codec wars are biting: Firefox isn't supported, because these
sites don't want to transcode to Ogg, and the Morg won't let any other
format play, even if the codecs are available locally.

Mozilla is working on a gstreamer backend for <video>.

Whichever gstreamer codecs the user has installed will then be
available. This is the same approach that Linux distros usually use
when shipping Gnash.
H.264 and Theora aren't in a codec war because they aren't
competitive. There is no format war, we have always been at peace with
Oceania.
