Whomever wrote the KDE backends made a complete mess of all of this. Since the code appears to actually be KDE4 code and not just based on Qt4 then deprecating kde3/kde4 makes no sense and would be somewhat confusing to specify an --enable-gui option of Qt4 but it needs KDE4.
