In the (pre-2009) past all donations went trough OpenMediaNow which payed the core developers. Nowadays each developer seeks fundings independently, in a variety of ways. The memory management improvement in my list (as RTMP in Ben's list), for example, is already quoted and fundraised by linuxfund [1].
