We had a similar question a few days ago on the mailing list. If you search the archive, you may find something of interest.

Otherwise, if you are a programmer, you'll want to check out the latest git sources and try building the software. Then the next problem would be finding an interesting feature to work on. You could look for bug reports on Savannah and try solving one or two to get some experience with the code base.

If you aren't a programmer, you can help out with documenting or translating the software. There's lots of things you can help with.
