FYI, when you run Gnash as root, it will switch the framebuffer (/dev/fb0) to "graphics mode", meaning that you won't see console messages and keyboard events (like CTRL-C) won't get processed. When you kill Gnash then the framebuffer remains in the graphics mode and this might appear to you like the "freezed console" you mentioned. When Gnash does not run as root it usually has not the necessary system rights to do the switch and therefore you still see the cursor blinking and the keyboard events get processed by the terminal even if Gnash is running.
