It's > probably alright when used with something simpler (e.g. Openbox). you are right: SLiM is not intended to be used with gnome: it is desktop-independent and aims to be light and simple, for this reason it has been intentionally developed with a minimal set of feature (and some other basic feature should be implemented in the future) so SLiM is often used in lightweight/minimal GNU/Linux installations, and with a lot of light desktop managers (i.e. xfce, *box)... i developed the slim-gnewsense-1.1 to use it with a basic gNS 3 installation on a very old & "poor" IBM Thinkpad (Celeron 600MHz, 192MB RAM, 16MB VRAM)... > Anyway, the theme is nice.
