In order to use 3D applications like compiz or some 3d game, your hardware (video card) needs free drivers for 3D acceleration. Intel video cards, and some ati has them. If you're using nVidia, AFAIK there is no 3d acceleration free drivers (nuoveau is still on very early development stage), therefor is not possible to use.
