Rockbox would provide a firmware with Vorbis compatibility, and it's not proprietary. There appears to be an effort to get Rockbox running on the Clip at [1] but appears to have some issues still. Maybe you could help contribute somehow? Alternatively, if you're willing to give up your Clip, you could check out their list of supported devices on which Rockbox runs well.
