You will notice that one of the key differences between gNewSense and other distros is that gNewSense kernel does not contain proprietary firmware. This implies that some pieces of hardware that work on Debian, for instance, will not work on gNewSense. But that applies mostly to Wireless cards, bluetooth, that kind of stuff, not keyboards. If you wanna se if this is the problem, you can try running Ubuntu, if it works on Ubuntu then its probably because it uses a proprietary firmware. But be sure to use the version of Ubuntu which gNewSense is based on, which I believe is 7.x.
