Hmmm... Not entirely sure what is going on, but that /grub/stage2 looks strange for a gNewSense 2.x system (are you running 2.x?), as grub is under /boot/grub, not /grub. Are you sure that gNewSense is on (hd0,0) (AKA sda1)? This is the best grub page I know of[1], and as it is written for Ubuntu Hardy/Intrepid/Jaunty it will match a gNewSense 2.x system very easily.
