Removing the initrd line from boot.cfg sped things up a lot.
The reason I use boot.cfg is so that I don't have to set the pmon
variables. That way I can have different systems on CF and simply swap
out the chip to change systems. Or put in another chip to do a clean
installation. It's sometimes slower to run than a normal HD and
definitely slower to install. Also, I am surprised to find that some of
the CF connectors coming loose physically, ruining the card.
