I have not tried getting a free software desktop computer before, but if you can't find one, you could look into getting a laptop instead. I recommend the Lemote YeeLoong 8089_B laptop. It runs gNewSense Parkes very well. <http://www.lemote.com/en/products/Notebook/2010/0310/112.htm>
It's not so powerful when it comes to RAM, but it's very useful for terminal work and it can browse with Iceweasel. Mine has trouble with Javascript-heavy websites, so I use the NoScript addon to make them run reasonably fast. In any case, I wish you good luck looking for a desktop! :)
