Thanks guys. I uninstalled pulseaudio. It took a lot of packages away with it (still gauging the magnitude of the tragedy). Then I told VLC to use ALSA as an output module, and CS5535 as the device, and it started to work. Installing mozilla-plugin-vlc also helped iceweasel produce sound (but whoever gets to ALSA first, locks it for other applications). I am not completely sure of the quality of sound produced, but at least I don't have a silent Lemote ;-). Looks like to make sound work I would have to configure every single application to use ALSA... is there any alternative to pulseaudio?
Thanks a million!
