   First off, you really should upgrade the kernel to the latest 
appropriate for 7.3 (2.4.18-10, IIRC).  I don't remember exactly what has 
been fixed, but 2.4.7 is OLD at this point.
   You won't need to recompile to get 100-BaseT/FDX, but you might have to 
specify a driver option.  If autonegotiation between your NIC and switch 
aren't working, look in /usr/src/linux-2.4/Documentation/networking/ for 
documentation specific to your card.  For example, from vortex.txt:
"insmod 3c59x options=0x204
  will force full-duplex 100base-TX"

   If you don't see any documentation in that directory, a google search 
for "[module name] linux options" should get you somewhere.  If you're 
really stuck, post back with more details such as the type of NIC, model 
of switch, and any diagnostic messages you're getting.
