You haven't yet used GNOME 2, have you? :) The GNOME developers have decided that configurability is not what users want, and are effectively doing away with it. There is no mechanism provided by GNOME 2 to change your window manager. Additionally, many, many of the things which previously WERE configurable, no longer are.
