The first line of defense I'd recommend is a set-top firewall; I've been 
using a 4-port NetGear RT314 cable/dsl router (up until a budget squeeze 
where I had to drop back to 56K), and I've heard that the equivalent 
Linksys unit is as good. This provides a DHCP server internally and 
network address translation so multiple machines on your home network 
can access the Internet transparently, and it includes the basic 
firewall functions to protect you from direct network intrusions. 

It can't stop Outlook viruses, of course, but that's an entirely different 
problem, unrelated to cable modem use.
