Open source is obviously preffered, The first line of defense I'd recommend is a set-top firewall; I've been using a 4-port NetGear RT314 cable/dsl router (up until a budget squeeze where I had to drop back to 56K), and I've heard that the equivalent Linksys unit is as good. This provides a DHCP server internally and network address translation so multiple machines on your home network can access the Internet transparently, and it includes the basic firewall functions to protect you from direct network intrusions. It can't stop Outlook viruses, of course, but that's an entirely different problem, unrelated to cable modem use. - -- John Abreau / Executive Director, Boston Linux & Unix Email [EMAIL PROTECTED] / WWW http://www.abreau.net / PGP-Key-ID 0xD5C7B5D9 PGP-Key-Fingerprint 72 FB 39 4F 3C 3B D6 5B E0 C8 5A 6E F1 2C BE 99 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Exmh version 2.5 07/13/2001 iQCVAwUBPfQbT1V9A5rVx7XZAQKtvQP+L0gA3eo1OjY7byXiTUc0pBTUIG1HRXZj TQsob6B1Ams0bkCIYbiBztFECF6IvZF755Jwv87tYzR02pyaFf6bu1flT9faoh9r 74Ta9evVbiZznUYZ9oV4ZEwQITKfJ6H47e4hFyMjJsOujNQ9fCVeM7/DTCZ5KxZM kv/i3cEaTmk= =2vhz -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________ gnhlug-discuss mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss
