I don't remember if anyone suggested this but I've seen some pretty odd behavior when a system simply runs out of disk space. If for example root is full, you usually can't log in or start many programs. Of course if you can get the system to come up single user with the disks in read only mode you should be able to see if you have any space left or perhaps you've had a log overflow...
