I'm currently using att.net for my ISP over dialup through Comcast digital phone service. To keep the story short, it looks like the least expensive high speed service I can get is to switch to a Verizon bundle of local, long distance, and DSL. Reading their literature they look like a Microsoft house. I think their ISP is MSN. I probably will have Windows on my network for my wife. Has anyone any experience with Verizon DSL? I wonder what happens when Mozilla tries to sign onto MSN.
You do not need to use any of the Verizon software. Just get a router which supports PPPoE. To activate service, you coul duse their
software on a Windows/Internet Explorer box. I've simply called up their
tech support and had them verbally give me the username & password for
PPPoE. I believe you can do it from their web site as well.
The few times I've tried to use their software for hookup I've had difficulty. In one case, the computer never booted again and it required a operating system reinstall for Windows. Twice it ate the TCP/IP stack as far as I could tell. Try to avoid it if you can. It is possible they've improved it. I doubt it could have gotten worse.
I've seen the "MSN included" note with Verizon DSL. I always presumed it was merely membership for webmail and such. Verizon runs its own mail servers and such. I see no connection with MSN other than they bundle a free membership, which you can ignore. I've never used MSN nor needed it with Verizon DSL.
Their connectivity has been adequate.
Have you checked whether you can get MV's DSL/V service where you are? They provide their service over Verizon lines. Of course, they would be more expensive, which may eliminate them. Visit http://www.mv.net to check availability and rates. I believe they are running a special now.
I've had excellent experiences with MV. They are OS-agnostic and technically quite sound.
