If anyone checks out the latest "Linux User & Developer" there's an interview with our own maddog in there. One interesting thing he talks about is the "total cost of non-ownership" - how much does it cost you to not be able to do things because you don't own the code. Example - the code (proprietary) may do 80% of what you need, but what do you lose in business because you can't modify the code to do the other 20%?
