Thanks for the replies. When I got back to my office I checked out Apple's
support web site and found that the problem of losing the connections is
apparently well known (particularly in the Panther releases). They had a fix
which simply used the "connect to server" feature of finder. Specifically
using the IP address and the share name successfully mounted the share but
the bottom line is that there is a bug in there somewhere.

P.S. The "connect to server" target is specified as
smb://servername/sharename and I simply plugged in the IP address of the
target Windows box.
