That's a good suggestion - I've seen laptops with broken screens going for under $150.

You can also usually get just the specific part you need on eBay, computer junkyarders sell them. I got a DC power board/cable for my wife's laptop for $30. We had the same problem as Peg, except substitute toddler for dog. The hard drive also got a nice gouge in a platter from the fall, so that got upgraded.

My new laptop I got with the magsafe power and sudden motion sensor to hopefully avoid a repeat of those problems. live'n'learn...
