That unpleasant behavior does sound familiar - IIRC it spent approx half an hour busily creating gigantic databases and littering my email subtree with its bookkeeping files when I tried it a few months ago.

You can use the clickey-GUI-mousey interface when you feel like it or you can use the low-level MH commands (each one an independent app) and the one-file-per-message approach makes many mail-processing tasks very straightforward.
