Another vote for clamav, here. Use it on all the mail servers I run. I've never used it on a desktop machine, but have manually scanned stuff with it.
As mentioned earlier, there is a Windows version, too, called ClamWin. It would also be useful to know how you intend to use it, because there may be something else better suited to your needs.
