My initial query was largely rhetorical, though I would have been pleased to learn that there is *any* benefit whatsoever to including a recruiter in your connections list. To the contrary, here is an article that uses the term "pollution" to describe the presence of recruiters (or anyone else with whom you've not interacted on a professional basis) in your connections list:
