I don't believe we attempted to determine the quantity. We did ascertain (and post to this list) some anecdotal examples of similar organizations, not necessarily LUGs, and their structure: FSF, Python SF, Milwaukee LUG, SCOSUG are 501c3s. Boston UG is a 501c6. Finding all the LUGs would be an interesting exercise.
