If I remember correctly, part of the problem is that you no longer want
to reference your cdrom via /dev/hd(x). On my system here, (similar
setup - IDE cdrw) once you've recompiled the kernel, you want the change
the /dev/cdrom link from /dev/hd(x) to /dev/scd0
