Should work find (though I have never setup a smbpasswd).
In fact the encrypted passwds should be portable across most Unixes,
E.g. I once made an account for a friend of mine, and I just
copy-n-pasted his 13 character encrypted passwd from a Solaris box to a
Linux box /etc/passwd and he could log in fine.
I also wrote a little perl script called "update" that updates various
files in /etc (passwd included) for a couple of laptops (and some
desktops too), since NIS does not help when these laptops are taken on
the road.
For a small number of machines and/or users this sort of thing is
acceptable if you don't want to set up or depend upon NIS, but as the
number scales up it can become quite a pain...
