  Check the log files (should be under /var/log depending on configuration).

  Run "testparm" to test your Samba configuration file.

  Try running "smbd" and/or "nmbd" from the command line.  Perhaps they are
emitting a useful error message.

  The most recent stable version of Samba is 2.0.6, I believe.  The
development version doesn't even have a number yet, but is called SAMBA_TNG.
Samba V6 would be from the far future, and I would sure like a copy if you
have one.  ;-)
