<I also wonder how much of it <needs to go into one database, or could it be separate dbs? (one <question: are you building a data warehouse, or will this be for <transactional systems, or both? Although initially there will be only one database, plans are afoot to
build more in the long run, to include both data warehousing and OLTP.
At least two people will have to know and support the o.s. and Oracle,
neither of whom have much in the way of experience or training at this
point. Not the ideal situation, but this is the type of organization that
is about 2-3 years behind the corporate sector IT-wise, and which takes 2-3
times as long to make decisions and actually implement them. Just a fact
of life. In its defense, the last thing they want to be seen as doing is
frivolously blowing taxpayer money.
