My laptop has one of these... I've never seen one break and I'm pretty
rough with mine.  They take a lot of getting used to.  Don't try to do
any graphics work with them as they don't have the fine control of other
pointing devices.  If you go this route, expect purchase requests for
external mice.  

They aren't bad for point & click stuff as long as you aren't in a
hurry.  But they will annoy anyone not used to them.

I suggest going to a store and trying them.  You'll get the idea.
