I have this working, so I may be able to help a bit; /dev/pilot is the
default device, so it is definitely more convenient to have /dev/pilot
pointing at /dev/ttyS0 (beats having to type the device name every
time). You probably also want to set the PILOTRATE environment
variable; my Palm Vx sync's just fine with PILOTRATE=115200, though
YMMV as usual. You probably want to run "pilot-xfer -b _directory_name_"
first, as that will back up your Palm, and then you can experiment
with other things, confident in the knowledge that you have a fresh
backup ;-)
If you are using StarOffice sync rather than pilot-link, it may require
the /dev/pilot link rather than just strongly suggest it; I don't
remember as I haven't used that in a while (the sync part of that
started duplicating entries because it didn't recognize that they were
the same; I got tired of deleting duplicate entries every time I sync'd
and a) don't use StarOffice for that very often, and b) when I do, it
is set to "hand-held overwrites desktop".
The Debian package for pilot-link sets everything up correctly, if
you're running Debian (the configure script will ask you which serial
port the cradle is hooked up to and make the /dev/pilot->/dev/ttyS0
link for you). There may be a corresponding RPM for RPM-based
distributions, too.
