If you are running Red Hat Linux 6.0 or greater, look at the
/var/log/boot.log file. This has exactly what you are looking for.
If you are not a fan of Red Hat, it should be possible to obtain the things
you need from the Red Hat "initscripts" package, and integrate them into your
own favorite distro.

Red Hat buffers these in memory somehow, I believe. I think they use a
special-purpose daemon called "minilogd" for this.
This feature is one of the main reasons I like Red Hat. The ability to find
out what happened -- or didn't happen -- during boot is invaluable when the
system you're working on is in Boston and you're in NH.
