Good morning, I'm hoping for advice.

My computer at home has 2 hard drives and the master has crashed. The
secondary drive is partitioned like so:

hdb1 <extended> containing
  hdb5 linux swap
  hdb6 windows data
  hdb7 /home
  hdb8 /opt
hdb2 /

Lilo is on hdb2.

I created a boot disk with the kernal image from /boot and tried to boot
from floppy.
I get this:
VFS kernel panic open root device 08:34
unable to mount rootfs on device 08:34

Questions:
1: Is there a way for me to boot to Linux so I can use the machine in it's
present state?
2: Any recommendations for a new hard drive?
