Whatever program is running xauth (to manage the mit-cookies in your
~/.Xauthority file) is not supplying "<somehostname>:10.0" to the add
action, but rather just ":10.0". Similarly for the AF_UNIX interface to
the X server.
I think it needs to supply <somehostname> because ~/.Xauthority is a
means of managing cookies for MANY X servers you connect to (on different
machines, ssh redirs, etc).
I say follow Bruce's lead on a messed up ssh environment (if you are
using ssh somehow...). If all else fails, shutdown all X servers and
blow away your ~/.Xauthority file(s), relogin and start everything back
up.
