OK, here's the deal...
I'm introducing a few friends to Linux. They can generally handle a
Windows machine well enough to surf the web, type letters, and read
email... but they are by no means experts...
I'm attempting to introduce them to Linux by giving them shell accounts
to play on, as they generally (all but one) do not have a spare box to
install Linux on at home and do not want to take the plunge to Linux
blindly.
What I'm looking for is an interesting, fairly brief, single-document
(not linked web pages) tutorial for absolute newbies handed a shell
account. This must be something under say... 100 pages and
printable. I've looked in the LDP and found only decent guides for
admins, programmers, etc. (And I already printed a copy of LAME for the
guy with the linux box).
The types of topics I'm looking for are:
0. Intro to the various SSH clients for Windows/Mac
1. Simple, common bash commands
2. A kickstart intro to pine (the internal help files are good, but I
need to get these people to that point)
3. Basic intro/usage/pros/cons to vi/emacs/pico
4. Really basic intro to bash shell scripting.
5. Intro to IRC/jabber/etc on a cli
6. How to use FTP to exchange files with your own system
...and the kicker... I need this to be interesting to the average joe.
Anyone know of such an animal? I really don't want to writ it
myself... I just don't have the time...
Thanks,
Brian
