I have seen messages in my log for a drive that was making strange clicking noises. I forget what the messages said, but they were scary enough for me to know that the filesystem was deteriorating. I quickly decommissioned that machine (it was my 486 web/print server) and migrated everything over to my 166, before the drive actually failed, so I don't know what the terminal symptoms would have been.
Copy everything that you need off that drive FAST.
