Æleen Frisch, author of the O'Reilly Sysadmin book has a quite lengthy article in there about setting up LDAP for either directory services, authentication, or both. I only read the first page or so, but as is typical of Æleen's writing, it was far more understandable than most other docs I've read on the subject.
