To augment Paul Lussier's excellent post, I would hasten to add that you should also take into consideration the ease with which you could perform a partial (1 file) or total (all files) recovery. That, IMNSHO, and I am not a professional sysadmin, is the proof of the pudding, and where the real value of the extra money spent for better/faster hardware is derived. Backups are useless unless you can make efficient use of them.
