This is my fault.  I needed to build a new initrd (mkinitrd 2.4.18 > 
/boot/initrd-2.4.18).  At least now I can try grabbing 2.4.19-ac
and seeing if that fixes my HPT372 non-support and non-working NIC 
problems....
