  Interesting.  I never actually tried that combination before, but I just
did, and it worked.

  Red Hat Linux 6.2 + errata
  OpenSSL 0.9.5a-7.6.x
  OpenSSH 3.4p1-1
  PuTTY 0.52

  Obviously, you have solved the problem to your own satisfaction, but I
figured it was worth mentioning.
