1) xpdf refused to display any text that required "Adobe-Identity";
2) I installed acroread;
3) acroread requires GTK+ UI 2.4 or greater;
4) I downloaded gtk+-2.6.0;
5) gtk+ requires glib, atk, pango;
6) I downloaded glib-2.6.0, atk-1.9.0, pango-1.8.0, all dated 12/24/05;
7) I configured, "maked", and "make installed" glib, but INSTALL
contained this nonsensical instruction to rm -rf two files that weren't
directories and that couldn't, in fact, be found, because there is no
/install-prefix or anything to tell me what should be substituted for
"install-prefix";

8) I tried to configure atk, but because there is not global script to
build glib, atk, pango, and gtk+ in some integrated way, it had no idea
that I had a version of glib > 2.5.7, and I had no idea how to get it to
know that I had, because the instructions on setting an environment
variable were equally useless.
