I'm currently working on a head tracking project using webcams as part of a
graduate course in computer vision..

I'll have a look at camtrack (thanks for the link, they're using hue
tracking which might be the first step for me as well).  I'm using Opencv
and Qt because that's what I have experience with, so it'll be a bit
different.

I work for CanAssist (a non-profit at the university of victoria that
develops tech for people with disabilities), and one of the devices that
some of our clients have shown great interest in is the Asus EeePC.  So one
of the goals for my project is to make the headtracker work with the
embedded webcam in an EeePC.   If that worked reliably it would be a
fantastic assistive device for $400.
