Those buttons, hidden by default, allow the user a finer control of what's in the data entry (it's a popup menu). It can allow to set a value to NULL, or to reset a value, or to set the value to be the default value (if one is defined). To see how it works, apply the patch I just sent you for the test-dyn-widgets.c file, run "./test-dyn-widgets -t 7" and select a table.
