It's a lot I don't use gda (I usually access pg directly), but IIRC there were "dictionaries" (XML files) that, once created, cached a lot of data... Shouldn't constraints/keys/etc be there, too? So that, in the worst case, the startup is slightly delayed (to analyze the db), but then there's nearly no slowdown...
