Good to hear it is fine on other processors -- didn't really doubt that, but would be good to know why it is so grindingly slow on Nvidia.
I forgot to report the second problem -- I couldn't figure out how to get the gnome-do preferences up from docky (being so slow made it hard to play around) -- so had to use gconf-editor to fix the preferences back to classic mode.
